We will be starting a new round of discipleship groups on February 10th. In response to the feedback we have received, we will simply be studying the Bible together (imagine that!), beginning with the books of Ezra and Nehemiah. To facilitate greater participation and application of God’s timeless truths to our lives, we will be forming four groups, both men’s and women’s, meeting at 10:00 am and 7:30 pm on Wednesdays.
Why the Books of Ezra and Nehemiah?
As Tony Evans writes in his introduction to the book of Ezra, “The book of Ezra is about spiritual restoration. It deals with the restoration of the temple by Israel’s people after their return from Babylonian captivity as a result of their persistent disobedience and idolatry. God had made a kingdom promise to them that if they would return to Him, He would bring them back to their land… The message of Ezra is that when we depart from God, we lose our experience of Him. But, when we return to Him, He will restore us to fellowship with Him.” (The Tony Evans Bible Commentary, pg 450).
Having just concluded the study Return to Me by Claude King, the twin books of Ezra and Nehemiah seem a fitting place for us to study, continuing the heart-work of spiritual renewal, even as we pray that God revives our church.
How will we study these books?
Rather than be spoon-fed from a “Bible scholar,” this study will push us to become students of the Word ourselves. We will follow an inductive Bible study pattern to listen to what God was saying (in context to the original audience), is saying (as the Word is living and active, still fully applicable to us today), and how we should respond to it (specific applications for us in 21st Century America).
Critical to the fruitfulness of these discipleship groups is taking time to study the text each week before meeting, and allowing the text (by God’s Spirit) to examine your heart and life. The discipleship groups then become a platform for community and accountability as we work through applying God’s Word to our lives, experiencing gospel-transformation.
